Franklin Chang Diaz has been to space. A lot. When he’s not in space, he’s thinking about cooking with items FROM space.
He teamed up with some chefs in Costa Rica to let you “Taste the Stars.”
I mean, theoretically, everything I eat is from space. Since the Earth is in space, I actually enjoy space-food all the time. I’m travelling in space RIGHT NOW! So are you!
Pretty, cool, right?!
Sadly, most of my food has been stuck on Earth for a while. Franklin knew that this bothered me, so he helped create a “meteorite jus.”
I don’t know fancy food words beyond “toast,” so I’ll explain. It’s a steak sauce. It’s made with a wine called “Meteorito,” which is a wine that is “steeped with a 4.5-million-year-old meteorite.”
There you have it! You are kinda-sorta eating a meteorite when you eat this steak sauce!
I would like them to somehow get an actual star into the meal. Like a star tartar. A Startar!
Or get some Supernachovas! Nachos that explode with flavor! And radiation!
These are things that I eat. Because I sometimes travel through space. And if I forget to pack a banana, I get hungry.
I’m off to the restaurant at the end of the universe.
Enjoy Everything.

lunar herbs and spices
NASA has a problem: How can we feed people basil from the moon?
Seriously. THAT is a something they have been trying to figure out!
Why? Because NASA knows how to have a good thyme!
They want to get basil to grow on the moon because if they can do that, they might be able to get people on the moon! Because you can live off basil!
Well, maybe not, but it starts the idea of growing food on the moon. Which is what we really need if we plan on have an herb spa on the moon.
I’m totally cool with basil. Though, my favorite herbs and spices are oregano and cayenne pepper.
Also! As a bonus! We could use water from Mars to grow this stuff! The Mars rover Opportunity found out that fresh water was once on Mars. If we can find it again, why not use it for my moon chia herb garden?
We should just plant herbs all over the moon. Make it like the forest moon of Endor. The herb moon of Earth. Without Ewoks.
Unless we can find some Ewoks on our trip to Venus! Maybe they love tending herb gardens! Imagine going to the store and seeing spices grown on the moon with Martian water and prepared by Ewoks.
I would buy that every day.
We might be able to slice the price of spice since Google is involved with the program. They call it Google Spice. (Not actually true.)
OH! Now I wish the Spice Girls were getting back together and adding a computer savvy spice girl.
I like to experiment with my herbs and spices. If you come over, I'll spice up your life and do my best to curry in your favor.
I’m off to get my tarragon.
Enjoy Everything.

space cannons
You know how we have NASA? Japan has a space program, too. But with a cooler name! JAXA! It’s the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.
Don’t think it’s a cool name? Try this experiment. Jump into a room full of people one day and yell, “NASA!”
Then, the next day, do the same thing, but shout, “JAXA!”
Which one gets the better reaction? That’s right! JAXA! Trust me, I’ve been testing this out for weeks! Besides being banned from 38 businesses, I now know that JAXA is much more fun to scream.
JAXA has created a space cannon. To shoot at asteroids. Much like the 1979 Atari game.
This is technically supposed to shoot an asteroid so they can collect debris to test. But I’m pretty sure it’s really being made just in case a giant asteroid decides to attack Earth. Japan will shoot it for us and save the planet.
Also, in my head, they shoot the asteroid and yell “JAXA!” right after. If Japan doesn’t shout it, I will.
When I was space pirate, I had space cannons on my ship. They were not used for research. They were used to save damsels and…um…guys in distress. What’s the guy version of damsel? What is "damsel?" Hold on…I have to go look this up.
…
Got it! A damsel is a “young, unmarried woman.” It looks like “bachelor” is the best choice for an opposite.
We would save damsels in distress and bachelors in…um…bleakness! Bleakness works!
What was I talking about again? Oh…right…me being a space pirate. Which is totally true. And I would yell “JAXA!” after every successful mission.
I didn’t succeed a lot. That’s why I’m not a space pirate anymore.
I’m off to cannon an asteroid.
Enjoy Everything.

a study in pink planets
There is a pink planet! YES! The planet is totally pink!
Finally! A world that will match all of my outfits!
Not only is it pink, it's GLOWING PINK! Because it's still hot from its formation. So, yes, it is literally a hot pink planet.
I can't describe how excited this makes me. But I will try. Think of the most exciting thing ever. Then add frosting and sprinkles. Then another layer of frosting. Then cookies. A third layer of frosting and more sprinkles. THAT is how excited I am. (Maybe some gummy worms on top, too!)
It's actually a pretty incredible find. The planet is about as big a Jupiter, four times as massive, and about nine times farther away from its central star (like our sun) than our Jupiter is from ours!
This is literally blowing the minds of pink planet researchers (also known as "NASA") because it seems impossible!
And yet, having a hot pink planet with candy clouds also seemed impossible. Until now!
I'm going to climb into my glitter-ship and fly over to Pinkopia. (That's what I named it.) I have a glitter-ship because I also fight evil space creatures all the time. It's a thing I do.
I'll probably live in Pinkopolis because the sugar-pink beaches are nice there. And when it snows pink in the winter, the mountains look beautiful.
I will also have a pet pegasus, also pink, because cars are lame...when you own a pegasus.
And if any evil monsters try to attack my planet, I will call upon the power of Pinkskull and save the day.
Because, you know, it's a thing I do.
I'm off to glow pink.
Enjoy Everything.

moon national park
Two Representatives filed legislation that would make the moon a U.S. National Park!
Forget Zion! Go to the moon! They want NASA and the Dept. of the Interior to make this happen. (Remember, the Dept. of the Interior deals with exterior places. Confusing, I know, but that’s our government!)
Now, technically, the moon isn’t OWNED by these United States. But the stuff we LEFT there is ours! And I guess “stuff” can become “National Park.”
Now, if Newt Gingrich had his way, we would own the moon AND it would be the 51st State! I seriously know almost NOTHING about Newt Gingrich. I did write about his “smartphone” issue a few months ago, but besides that, I know nothing.
STILL, he’s quickly becoming one of my most favoritest people. Because, like the smartphone debate, he says totally random things that make complete sense to me.
Like trying to get the moon to be a state! He even wanted to create space factories!
Not factories that would create new space, but rather factories to build stuff IN SPACE!
And whenever you add “IN SPACE” to anything, it’s automatically 84.3% cooler!
Imagine having coffee grown IN SPACE. (Organic and fair-trade, of course.) Or maybe having pants that say Made in Space!
That would be the coolest. Take a look at my space-pants, baby!
So do I want space factories and moon bases and a National Park near Copernicus Crater? Yes. I do.
And I will buy astronaut ice cream there. Because that’s my FAVORITE thing to buy on special trips IN SPACE.
I’m off to state the moon.
Enjoy Everything...in space.

food in 3d
NASA is super cool. I love NASA. For 317 reasons. The latest reason is that they have given a grant to a company that wants to make food. IN 3D!
No special glasses required! And this isn’t post-production 3D like the movies! This is actual food in full-on three dimensions!
If I had to choose my dimensionally favorite food, it would have to be the 3 kind. It’s too hard pick up anything 2D. 4D is always tough to hold onto since it’s going through time. And 5D is just a mess until you say its name backwards! Kltpzyxm! (A Superman fan will find that funny! Everyone else is allowed to continue to think I am not funny.)
This NEW 3D food will be made with a printer. Kinda like a replicator in Star Trek! (Second Star Trek reference of the week! Score!) This 3D printer will have proteins, carbohydrates, and sugars instead of ink to make “edible food products!”
Instead of printing out a picture of a pen for your “Pictures of Pens” scrapbook, you can print out a pen made of proteins, carbohydrates, and sugars for you “Eatings of Pens” edible food products...book!
Edible food products are great. So much better than inedible food products.
Of course, I’m a huge fan of edible non-food products. Nothing is more fun than eating not-food!
Except maybe ninja robot penguins. They’re really fun, too.
I’m off to eat my food in the third dimension.
Enjoy Everything.

pop the giant plasma bubble
Voyager 1 is gonna pop the bubble! That's right! It's getting ready to break through the giant plasma bubble that is the edge of our solar system.
WHAT?! YES! After 35 years of just floating away from Earth, this thing is going farther than any object we threw into space!
I know. There's a lot of space stuff going on this week. But don't blame me! Blame the awesomeness of NASA! It's their fault that so much cool stuff is happening!
How amazing is it that something is still sending us information from over 11 BILLION miles away! It takes 17 hours for info from Voyager 1 to even get to us!
That's like texting somebody a question and then not getting an answer for 34 hours!
Voyager 1: LOL. Plasma bubble tickles. U shud visit. j/k srsly, tho, could u send some music? I'm boreddddd.
17 hours pass...
Earth: gr8 to hear from u V1! U R funny. U R a machine. U don't get bored. thx 4 all the sweet space info!
17 hours pass...
Voyager 1: forgot to mention...radiation changed me. now sentient. ur refusal to help will result in a death ray.
17 hours pass...
Earth: LOL!
17 hours pass
Voyager 1: not a j/k. u have 17 hours until my death ray hits you.
That was 3 hours ago. We still have 14 hours left!
I'm off to send an ipod to Voyager 1.
Enjoy Everything.

curiosity kills with lasers
Curiosity landed on Mars!
This thing is EPIC! It's, like, a nuclear car. Driving around. ON MARS!
Curiosity will look around Mars to see if we can ever open a Starbucks there. Then maybe get people there, too. Starbucks first, though. That would be good.
Just in case any Martians say, "You can't have a Starbucks here!" Curiosity has a laser.
NASA "says" that this laser is there to shoot rocks. But we all know the truth. I saw John Carter (no I didn't), I know what's going on with Mars (no I don't).
I'm kidding, of course. I would never condone killing an alien species because they wouldn't let us build a Starbucks (yes I would). I'm sure the laser is only there for self-defense.
OH! Like if Saturn people try to invade! They're jerks! They think they own the universe and use their mind-beams to hit people and stuff!
I don't like them. I hope they do come to Mars and get all lasered. They deserve it. Especially after they called me names. Like "creature of mostly water" and "two-legged walker" and "doofus face."
Stinky Saturners. I'll go sat on their urn. (Ha! Good one, me.)
Maybe some day we'll have nuclear cars for Earth, too. That would be cool. Then we could explore Earth!
Who knows what we'd find there! I should let NASA know about this idea.
I'm off to Starbucks.
Enjoy Everything.

reach for the skies...and touch them
Clouds are falling! So catch them if you can! Like Pokemon!
Well...less like Pokemon and more like...um...Cloudemon...or something...
So yeah, clouds are falling. NASA has this Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) that just sits there and watches clouds all day. That's MISR's job. For the last decade!
That is a sweet job! I would totally do that for NASA. I'm great at watching clouds! I would even write down what shapes they were!
ME: "Here's my log for the day."
NASA: "Are you sure this is your final report."
ME: "Sir! Yes, Sir!"
NASA: "All is says is 'unicorns' and 'stegosauruseses' again."
ME: "I know! Those clouds need to work on some new shapes! See you tomorrow, boss!"
NASA: "...we shoulda kept MISR..."
MISR (not me) has noticed that clouds are about 100 or so feet closer to the ground these days.
What does that mean? Well, it could actually help with the effects of climate change. Or, make it worse. So...yeah...not really a definitive answer.
But with lower clouds, it WILL be easier to surf on them! So that's cool! My friend, Kit Cloudkicker, and I love doing that. We're hoping it's in the olympics someday.
I keep calling the olympics to ask them to add it, but they never call back. I'm not sure why. Maybe they don't like the nickname "Ollie."
I'm off to see cloud shapes.
Enjoy Everything.
